Solid State Bonding
Conventional joining procedures are not applicable in the case of multi-material systems on account of the formation of brittle intermetallic compounds at the interface and shape distortion of the parent materials. Solid state joining techniques, such as diffusion bonding (DB) by hot pressing, hot isostatic pressing (HIP), spark plasma sintering (SPS), friction stir welding (FSW) and explosive welding (EXW) are possible alternatives for fusion bonding that provide adequate mechanical properties to the joints. We investigate the interface phenomena occurring during solid state bonding of various multi-material systems and their effects on the properties of the final parts.
The research was conducted by Dr. Aslan Miriyev and also included collaboration with researchers in Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel (BGU) and Prof. Lutz Krüger from The Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany.
