Short Bio

Aslan Miriyev (Ph.D.) is a scientist interested in developing soft-bodied, intelligent, and cooperative robots of the future, allowing for friendly and sustainable human-robot and nature-robot ecosystems. Dr. Miriyev's research focuses on the nexus of disciplines to develop bio-hybrid soft intelligent robots. His particular interest is in synthesizing robots by creating physical artificial intelligence (PAI).

In 2021, Dr. Miriyev was appointed as Senior Lecturer (Tenure-track Assistant Professor) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) in Israel. At BGU, Dr. Miriyev is a PI and Director of the Physical Artificial Intelligence (PAI) LaboratoryDr. Miriyev's PAI research inherently combines materials, design and advanced manufacturing.

In 2019-2021, Dr. Miriyev was a scientist at Empa- Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, based in Dübendorf, Canton of Zurich, Switzerland. At Empa, Dr. Miriyev has worked at the new and unique Materials and Technology Center of Robotics (currently Laboratory of Sustainability Robotics), synergistically bridging Robotics and Materials Science disciplines to develop robots of the future.

In 2019-2021, Dr. Miriyev was also a visiting researcher at the Department of Aeronautics at Imperial College London, where he conducted research activities in the Aerial Robotics Lab, directed by Prof. Mirko Kovač.

In 2015-2018, Dr. Miriyev was a  post-doctoral research scientist in the Creative Machines Lab, directed by  Prof. Hod Lipson at Columbia University in the City of New YorkAslan's research has focused on soft functional materials, such as soft robotic actuators, as a part of an ambitious attempt to develop an autonomous robot that will walk out of the printerAslan has been the ISEF post-doctoral fellow since 2015.

Dr. Miriyev obtained his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Engineering from the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (Ph.D. in 2015).
