Short Bio 

Aslan Miriyev (Ph.D.) is a materials scientist interested in the fields of Soft Robotics, 3,4D-Printing and AI.  Dr. Miriyev obtained his Ph.D. degree in Materials Engineering from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beer-Sheva, Israel in 2015 . 

Dr. Miriyev is now holding a position of scientist at Empa- Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, based in Dübendorf, Canton of Zurich, Switzerland. At Empa, Dr. Miriyev is working on building a new and unique Materials and Technology Center of Robotics, synergistically bridging the disciplines of Robotics and Materials Science for developing robots of the future.

As of October 2019, Dr. Miriyev is also a visiting researcher at the Department of Aeronautics at Imperial College London, where he conducts research activities in the Aerial Robotics Lab, directed by Prof. Mirko Kovac.


In 2015-2018 Dr. Miriyev has been a  post-doctoral  research scientist in the group of  Prof. Hod Lipson at Columbia University in the City of New YorkAslan's research has focused on soft functional materials, such as soft robotic actuators, as a part of an ambitious attempt to develop an autonomous robot that will walk out of the printerAslan has been the ISEF post-doctoral fellow since 2015.

Leadership in conference organization

In 2015, Aslan initiated and organized the first international Additive Manufacturing Symposium in Israel, which took place in Tel Aviv under the framework of the international Welding, Joining and Additive Manufacturing Conference (WJAM2015). As a member of the organizing committee, Aslan suggested broadening the conference format to include, for the first time, a symposium fully dedicated to the additive manufacturing field. Leaders in the 3D-printing field from academia and industry from the U.S., Canada, Germany, Sweden, India, Russia, Israel and other countries participated in this event. Since then, the national WJAM conference has been taking place annually in the new format, with the same change envisioned for the international event that takes place in 5-year intervals.
