3D-Printing of Complex-Shaped TiC/Steel Composites

Approach

We designed TiC/steel composites with tailored property gradient using thermodynamic predictions based on TiCx/steel interaction and fabricated fully dense complex-shaped parts by binder-jet 3D-printing and free infiltration. This approach provides the potential for advanced applications in tooling, wear, aerospace, ballistics and other fields.

Research Team

The research was conducted in collaboration with Prof. Sudarsanam Suresh Babu from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and Oak Ridge National Laboratories, and Prof. Nachum Frage from the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel. The work has been led by the graduate student Mr. Asaf Levy, co-supervised by Dr. Aslan Miriyev and Prof. Nachum Frage.

3D-Printing experiments were conducted by Mr. Asaf Levy at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) at Oak Ridge National Labs (ORNL), Tennessee, together with with Dr. Amy Elliott from the MDF.
